The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Sunday, October 27 that they had cooperated with the United States in a successful operation against ISIS, apparently referring to reports that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was killed in a US military operation in Syria.
Mustafa Bali, director of the SDF media office, tweeted that the operation “is yet another proof of SDF’s anti-terror capability. We continue to work with our partners in the global coalition in the fight against ISIS terrorism. ”
SDF commander Mazlum Abdi said on his official Twitter account, “A successful, historical operation as a result of joint intelligence work with the US.”
The SDF is an alliance of groups in northeast Syria working with the US-led coalition against ISIS, but President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria two weeks ago before Turkey launched a cross-border military operation against the Kurdish presence in the region.
Trump approved a military operation a week ago, under which the US military equipped a special operations squad to target Baghdadi on Saturday, October 26 in the northern Syrian province of Idlib Newsweek reported from its own sources.
Newsweek pointed out that the information obtained confirms Baghdadi was killed through the operation, although international media is waiting for Trump to confirm or deny on October 27. However, CNN reported that private sources suggested Baghdadi blew himself up with a suicide vest before the attacks intensified.
