In a remarkable development of the Iranian crisis, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Monday, November 11 that it had detected uranium traces at an undisclosed location in Iran.
The report said that traces of manmade uranium, not uranium ore, were found at an undisclosed site in Iran, adding, “It is important that Iran continue to communicate with the Agency to resolve the issue as soon as possible.”
The agency did not specify the site, but media reports said that the agency took samples from a site in the Turquzabad district of Tehran earlier this year.
Underground
Tehran began enriching uranium at the Fordow underground site, but the IAEA has confirmed that the stockpile of enriched uranium is on the rise and that it is above the limit allowed by the deal.
According to the report, the stockpile of enriched uranium reached 551 kg, while the ceiling set in the nuclear agreement is only 300 kg, and advanced centrifuges were also used, contrary to the agreement.
European statement
France, Britain and Germany decided in a joint statement on Monday, November 11 that they would discuss the mechanism for resolving disputes contained in the nuclear deal, leading to the reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran. The Europeans also warned Tehran that its recent escalation has made it difficult for those countries to defuse tensions in the region, expressing deep concern over the decision to resume uranium enrichment at Fordow and calling on the regime to back down and fully cooperate with the IAEA.
Resumption of sanctions
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels that the EU should be prepared to respond to Iran’s violations of the nuclear deal, which could mean the resumption of international sanctions against Iran. “Otherwise we will reserve the right to use all the mechanisms provided for in the agreement.”
Veto will not save Tehran
Meanwhile, Iranian affairs researcher Mohammed Abadi said that UN Security Council Resolution 2231 lifted the application of seven UN resolutions sanctioning Iran, adding that in the case of the implementation of the mechanisms provided for in the agreement, Tehran is vulnerable to the reapplication of all these sanctions. Russia and China will not be able to save Iran with a veto this time, because, according to the agreement, the Security Council must vote on a draft resolution on the continuation of lifting the previous sanctions. Otherwise, if the council fails to pass this resolution, the sanctions will be automatically restored.
Abadi added to the Reference that the mullah regime has violated the limits set in the agreement, and its leaders constantly stress the possibility of stopping if the other parties offer a deal to mitigate the effects of US sanctions.
He said that according to the agreement, there is a joint committee charged with reporting to the Security Council, at least every six months, regarding any problems in implementation, which is happening now.
