After ISIS, what does the German right want from Syria?

The right-wing populist movement in Germany is trying to strengthen its relations with the Syrian regime, especially after the international coalition forces announced the defeat of ISIS in the battle of Baghouz.

A delegation from the parliamentary bloc of the right-wing opposition Party for Alternative for Germany (AFD) visited Syria on Tuesday (November 19th) for a week-long visit, during which talks with Syrian government officials and the president will take place.

Since the outbreak of the war in Syria, Germany has received 780,000 Syrian refugees, but a few are reported to have been unable to cope with the new life and have decided to voluntarily return to their country after receiving material assistance from the German government.

According to non-governmental data, since the beginning of the war in Syria in 2011, about 5.7 million people have been displaced from the country.

The Federal Statistics Office in Germany revealed that the number of refugees and asylum seekers reached 1.8 million by the end of 2018, of whom 1.3 million have residency, most of them Syrians, Iraqis and Afghans.

A spokesman for the parliamentary bloc of the Alternative Party, for Germany, said that the delegation entered Syria via the border with Lebanon, and will also leave this road, and noted that the reconstruction process in the Syrian areas, which were destroyed; because of the war, is in the interest of Germany.

From the perspective of the federal government, a political agreement, taking into account the interests of the opponents of the Syrian president, is a condition for such support.

It is planned to hold a meeting of party officials with officials from the ministries of foreign affairs, economy and tourism, as well as from the Chamber of Commerce, as well as with the speaker of the Syrian parliament.

This is not the first visit of the right-wing alternative party to Syria. A delegation of party politicians also visited Syria in March 2018, and the German federal government strongly criticized this visit at the time.

The party is demanding a new policy toward Syria, while other German parties see in its initiative, an attempt by him; to put pressure on Syrian refugees to return to their homeland.

He described the leader of the Greens, Robert Habek as trying to show Syria a safe country in this way, beyond the reasonable limits, stressing that the fighting is not safe at parts of the country while calling for the alternative party for Germany to normalize relations with Syria.
