Egypt on Thursday strongly condemned the Turkish parliament approval of a memorandum of understanding presented by the Turkish president to send military forces to Libya.
The memorandum, inked between Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council (PC) Fayez al Sarraj and the Turkish government on security and military cooperation, is null and void, said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.
Egypt stresses the Turkish parliament’s step represents in violation of international legitimacy and Security Council resolutions on Libya in a blatant manner, especially Resolution (1970) of 2011.
The Arab Republic of Egypt also warns against the consequences of any Turkish military intervention in Libya and its repercussions, and stresses that such interference will negatively affect the stability of the Mediterranean region, and that Turkey will bear full responsibility for this.
In this regard, Egypt emphasizes the unity of the Arab position rejecting any external interference in Libya, which was adopted by the Council of the League of Arab States at its meeting on December 31, 2019, and recalls the dangerous role; Turkey plays with its support for terrorist organizations.
Egypt calls on the international community to carry out its responsibilities urgently in dealing with this development, which threatens the regional escalation, and its dire effects on efforts to reach through the Berlin process of a comprehensive and implementable settlement based on addressing all aspects of the Libyan crisis through the international track.
