Qatar has committed everything against Sudan during the rule of the Muslim Brotherhood under ousted president Omar al-Bashir. While Doha claimed it was working on the promotion of Sudan as a tourist destination, it has looted the country’s monuments.
In 2008, the story began when Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, visited Sudan and earmarked $135 million for developing Sudan’s monuments, including the country’s pyramids. The Qatari project started in 2013.
Sudanese Minister of Tourism & Antiquities and Wildlife Mohammed Abdul Karim Al-hud said in April 2013 that Qatar would overhaul the Sudanese monuments. However, the Qatari project has turned to archeological excavations.
The Sudanese newspaper, Al-Jareeda, revealed in April 2019 that ousted president Omar al-Bashir had sold the nation’s monuments to the highest bidder. Doha was the highest bidder and al-Bashir sold the Sudanese monuments to Tamim’s regime through the Qatari project to overhaul the Sudanese monuments.
Sudanese writer Zuhair al-Sarraj said Qatar was robbing off Sudan’s history. Al-Sarraj wrote in article published in Nov. 2019 that Omar al-Bashir’s regime did not only rob Sudan’s wealth and fortunes, but it has also stolen the nation’s heritage and sold it to Qatar under the pretext of revamping the monuments by a Qatari project for the restoration of Sudanese heritage.
Qatar has been seeking to rob Sudan’s monuments, which would be exhibited in Qatar’s National Museum, which is under preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2020, which will be hosted by Qatar.
Al-Sarraj lamented that the Qatari excavation for monuments is still going on in Sudan.
