The Qatari role in terms of the situation inside the Sudan has been significant. Its intervention worked to thwart the transitional phase and change the view towards the transitional council by means of Qatar’s arms, driven to achieve Doha’s goals of returning the Brotherhood once again to authority in Sudan following the events that led to a major democratic transformation within the country.
Doha’s tools
Qatar has many tools inside Sudan to support its loyal groups, both directly and indirectly, on the political level, such as by establishing new parties or supporting existing parties close to the Brotherhood in order to control the political scene again in Sudan.
Qatar used its financial resources to support its inflammatory media network. It provided a safe haven for a list of terrorists on its Al-Jazeera platform, allowing them to broadcast their toxins, aided by a lack of tribal censorship.
There were some anti-revolutionary personalities, pens and voices inciting the regime to stir strife among the Sudanese people wanting to stand up to the oppression and corruption that they had suffered from for years under the unfair rule of the Bashir regime, which was ideologically in line with the Brotherhood and Qatar.
Official media
Qatari Brotherhood institutions served as platforms for many media professionals to spread toxins and corruption in the country, as they were not subject to specific supervision and had many facilities. There were no committees monitoring them or reviewing their methods of corruption. On the contrary, the main controller of the media was the ruling party that enforced its control through oppression and suppression of the media, which lacks the cadres, persuasive rhetoric, and resources that qualify it to be a media platform.
Among the top of these figures is journalist and editor-in-chief Al-Hindi Izz al-Din, a member of the spoiled regime, in addition to El Tayeb Mustafa, who has a close relationship with former President Omar al-Bashir. He was promoting many ideas of hatred and Islamism and was one of the reasons for the secession of South Sudan. A third character, Hussein Khogali, supported the unjust military regime and insisted on its continuance in Sudanese villages.
The Sudan News Agency (SUNA) was one of the most important news platforms in Africa, but it has witnessed a terrible deterioration over the last three decades, as it does not possess the modern technologies or qualified cadres. These institutions also relied on appointments subject to political appointment, loyalty to the regime and political ideology, not according to capabilities and competencies.
Qatari media rhetoric in Sudan
Sudanese researcher Muhammad Jamil Ahmed said in press statements that the Qatari media machine was at first obscuring the facts of the Sudanese revolution and diminishing its importance, but with the increase in the pace of the revolution and the expansion of its public domain, it was dropped in the hands of the Qatari Al-Jazeera channel to face this new challenge in Sudan. This was a variable that Qatar could not digest, because it is a different context. Perhaps that was one of the fortunes of the Sudanese revolution, which arose orphaned of any Qatari support.
With the success of the Sudanese revolution, another tone began to appear on Al-Jazeera, which was hosting Sudanese people affiliated with the Bashir regime, Ahmed said, adding that there was also news of suspicious Qatari diplomatic moves and conflicting news about visiting some political officials. Now Qatar is hosting political Islamists from Sudan who are close to Bashir, preparing them to appear on Al-Jazeera and elsewhere as Sudanese opposition.
The beginning of Qatar’s sabotage campaign in Sudan coincided with the overthrow of Bashir on April 11, 2019. The transitional military council subsequently assumed leadership under General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and then this interference in Sudan began to escalate.
