Qatar and Turkey have many shared goals. This is why the two states stand by each other, including in Qatar’s showdown with Gulf states and Egypt over its sponsorship of terrorism.
Turkey has established a military base in Qatar that on the surface aims to preserve Qatari security, but in essence aims at controlling the Qatari regime and Qatar’s gigantic wealth.
The two countries are also collaborating in other parts of the world, including in Libya and Sudan where both of them complement each other.
Ousted Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir eased Qatar’s control over his country. Nevertheless, Doha worked to woo the new political elite in Sudan after the downfall of Bashir’s regime.
Turkey, for its part, kept following developments in Sudan closely after the downfall of Bashir’s regime.
Turkey had earlier declared that it would raise its investments in Sudan to $10 billion. It also signed a memorandum of understanding with Bashir on the administrative control of the Sudanese Red Sea island of Suakin.
Sudan, political analysts said, face a big problem in dealing with the Qatari and Turkish conduct.
Sudan also tries to maintain its relations with the two states, but away from current state of regional polarization.
The same analysts added that Sudanese citizens will decide how Sudan will deal with the two states at the end of the day.
Sudan, they said, will have to manage a political process through which it can preserve its regional backers, especially those who want to nurture its stability and security.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Asmaa Mohamed Abdullah said earlier that her country expected fellow Arab states to give it moral support.
We also welcome any unconditional financial support, the Sudanese foreign minister said.
Qatar said it is keen on enhancing its cooperation with Sudan. The Qatari ambassador in Sudan said Qatari companies would invest in the Sudanese mining sector in the coming period.
In April last year, the United Arab Emirates put a deposit of $250 million in the Central Bank of Sudan. The deposit was part of a larger financial assistance package.
Saudi Arabia also pledged to give Sudan $3 billion in financial support.
