The branch of the Muslim Brotherhood organization in Sudan does its best to undermine this Arab country economically.
The organization encourages bakers to raise the price of bread by 100%. This can raise the price of the loaf of bread to 2 Sudanese pounds (roughly 2 cents), instead of 1 pound now.
The Muslim Brotherhood controls the dissolved Bakers’ Association.
This is apparently a small detail in the Brotherhood’s larger effort to return to power in Sudan. In this, they back the head of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
Making the people hungry
The Muslim Brotherhood works to make the rise in the price of the bread inevitable. Its affiliates steal subsidized flour and then sell it in the black market. Commercial bakery owners buy this flour, manufacture the bread and then sell it at unsubsidized rates. This has led to a reduction in the amount of bread available at subsidized bakeries.
The Bakers’ Association has called for raising the price of the bread. It threatened to start a general strike if the government does not approve the raise.
Measures
Sudanese Minister of Trade and Industry Madani Abbas Madani threatened to penalize bakers who will raise the price of the bread. Democracy, he said, does not mean chaos.
He said his government subsidizes the flour, whereas the affiliates of the Omar al-Bashir regime and the Muslim Brotherhood incite the bakers to increase the price of the bread.
He vowed to stand against bakers who mess with the bread prices.
Meanwhile, what are known as Sudanese Resistance Committees called on the government not to allow the bakers to raise the price of the bread.
The government, they said, has to work side by side with the bakers to solve this problem.
Sudan consumes 2 million tons of wheat annually. It has to pay about $2 billion to buy this wheat every year. National wheat production amounts to between 12 and 17% of total consumption.
