Egypt’s tourist landmarks light up in red in solidarity with China over coronavirus

A number of major Egyptian landmarks were lit up in red on Sunday evening in solidarity with the Chinese people over the coronavirus epidemic; a statement by the cabinet read, as fears over the outbreak globally continues to mount.

The landmarks included the Cairo Citadel, the Temple of Karnak in Luxor and Philae Temple in Aswan.

On Sunday Egyptian authorities announced the second confirmed case of the virus in the country, saying a “foreigner” had tested positive.

Last week the country’s first positive case, also a foreign national, was released from quarantine after fully recovering.

In the past weeks, Egypt has upped preventive measures at all entry points, conducting health examinations for travellers from areas associated with the virus.

The epidemic has killed over 3,000 people worldwide, the vast majority in mainland China.

Cases have reached 88,000 globally, with infections on every continent except Antarctica.
