Protests resumed during the past days in Lebanon, against the economic and banking policies in the country, and a number of protesters intentionally encroached on banks, smashed their fronts, threw Molotov cocktails, expressing their anger at the policies of those banks, their imprisonment of depositors ’money, and not allowing withdrawals except in Lebanese pounds.
The capital, Beirut, witnessed attacks by demonstrators against members of the Lebanese army and security forces, which led the political parties to announce their position on the events, while the Islamic Group, the branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Lebanon, tended to characterize the protests as a “hungry revolution”, which leads to increased chaos.
In a press conference held by the group at noon Thursday, April 30, 2020, the Islamic Group announced that its political office prepared a research paper to deal with the economic situation in Lebanon, accusing state institutions of corruption and non-application of the law, and declining interest in the productive sectors.
The research paper prepared by the Brotherhood in Lebanon included an item related to exempting foreign donations related to Corona from taxes and facilitating the entry of funds from international organizations, which reveals the group’s need for external funds sent by pro-Brotherhood countries, whether Qatar or Turkey.
Imad Al-Hout, head of the Political Bureau of the Islamic Group, said: The political class that mismanaged the country through quotas, maliciousness and contradictions is responsible for what the country has reached, and therefore it should be under accountability, adding that the group stands by the people in their demands, stressing that The right to express their pain in various available logical ways.
The same reaction is repeated every time Lebanon is exposed to protests against prices or living conditions, as the Islamic group that does not have any weight in the country suffices to present initiatives and research papers that do not resonate in the Lebanese street, especially since the last elections in the country did not bring the funds to a deputy One of the Brotherhood.
In turn, political researcher Rita Faraj said: The Islamic Group has witnessed a state of confusion since the 2018 elections, due to the negative effects that were reflected on it, internal administrative differences, and the Brotherhood’s endeavor to enhance their presence within the popular classes by presenting initiatives and visions, which comes in the context of changing the Lebanese political map on the level of Internal alliances and their influence on regional and geostrategic positions.
