U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called on Saturday for the UN to extend its conventional arms embargo on Iran beyond its scheduled end in October, citing Tehran’s recent launch of a military satellite.
The lifting of the embargo was stipulated in the nuclear deal which the U.S., under President Donald Trump, unilaterally renounced in 2018. “The world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism…should not be allowed to buy and sell conventional weapons,” Mr. Pompeo said on Saturday. He said Iran’s announcement on Wednesday that it had orbited its first military satellite demonstrated that its space programme – which Tehran has long insisted is peaceful and civilian – was in fact “neither peaceful nor entirely civilian.”
Mr. Pompeo said the technology used to launch the satellite – dubbed Nour, or “light” in Persian – was compatible with that used to launch ballistic missiles. As usual, officials of the mullahs’ regime began to make statements that what Washington was trying to do against Iran did not put pressure on it, as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced on June 24, 2020 that if Washington wanted to negotiate with Iran, it should first apologize to them and pay financial compensation to it.
Iranian Foreign Minister “Mohammad Javad Zarif” and his American counterpart “Mike Pompeo” also entered what we might call “the war of tweets” that erupted between them on June 23 on Twitter, as the American minister called on European countries to agree to the American decision, noting European countries will be in the range of Iranian fire if they are allowed to purchase weapons, and stressing that the countries that will supply Iran with weapons are: (Russia and China) that will cooperate with Tehran to supply modern-day combat aircraft, and Pompeo has published a map showing Iran’s ability to Violence in Europe and the potential for great harm to it in the event of an extension of the arms embargo.
On the other hand, the Iranian foreign minister responded to the allegations of his American counterpart, explaining that the information reported by “Pompeo” is false regarding Iran’s purchase of advanced combat aircraft once the arms embargo ends in October.
Questions arise about the outcome of the American decision, and what would the Iranian response be if Washington succeeded in obtaining the approval of the members of the Security Council, and the arms embargo was extended to Iran ?, And if Washington failed, what is the expected response by “Trump” ?, as well as what options are presented to Iran If the arms embargo were extended?
Therefore, Muhammad al-Abadi, director of the Jadar Center for Studies and Researcher specializing in Iranian affairs, indicated that the arms embargo decision is imposed on Tehran by the requirements of the 2015 nuclear agreement, and is supposed to end in October 2020, after which Iran will start importing weapons, so there are two countries in The Security Council is expected to impede the passage of the US decision to use the “right of veto”, which are: (Russia and China), which have desires that this embargo end to be able to send weapons to Iran.
Al-Abadi said in a special statement to the “reference” that the United States faces a major obstacle, which is the right of veto by Russia and China, because these two countries will not allow the American decision to be passed except through a major deal with Washington that it will not be able to, and for several reasons, among them Near the US elections in November 2020, and the current American demonstrations, as well as that Washington does not currently want to enter into a clash with Russia and China.
“Al-Abadi” pointed out that Washington’s endeavors as a result of this decision is to exert a kind of pressure on Iran to continue its path to isolate Iran economically and internationally, and America’s motives from this decision is to threaten the international community, and to persuade European countries that if Iran receives new weapons and new warplanes from Russia and China in particular, this would pose a great danger to Europe.
