According to the General Directorate of Dams in Iraq, rainwater constitutes 30% of Iraq’s water resources, while the waters of the rivers extending from Turkey and Iran constitute 70%, while the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, which descend from the mountains of southeastern Turkey and extend through Syria and then Iraq, before pouring into The Gulf, Iraq’s main source of water for agriculture.

It is noteworthy that the rate of decline heralded a major problem, and placed Mesopotamia in front of a potential disaster after Iran also diverted the course of rivers that were contributing to the supply of water to Iraq.
