Nahla Abdelmonem
Indonesian police succeeded in arresting the military commander of the al-Qaeda-leaning Islamic militant group Jemaah Islamiah.
This man is accused of manufacturing the bombs used in the Bali terror attacks in 2002 and an attack on a famous hotel in Indonesian capital Jakarta in 2003.
The Jemaah Islamiah military commander was arrested in early December, a senior police officer said.
He said he did not show any resistance at the time of his arrest.
Indonesian police has been hunting for the Jemaah Islamiah commander since 2003.
Who is he?
Indonesian police believes the man arrested in the raid was the military commander of the local branch of Jemaah Islamiah.
He used to supervise the making of explosives within the group. The same explosives caused the death of hundreds of people, including tourists, in different parts of Indonesia.
The Bali bombing, which took place on October 12, 2002, left 202 people dead, including Australian, British, American and Swedish nationals.
The Jemaah Islamiah was also behind the bombing of Marriott hotel in Jakarta on August 5, 2003. The bombing left 12 people dead and hundreds of others injured. The same group was behind the bombing of a famous market in Sulawesi Island in 2005. The bombing left 20 people dead.
The man arrested in the latest raid joined a training camp of al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, Indonesian authorities say.
He was also responsible for the training of Indonesian nationals who joined the terrorist organization later, they add.
