Saied comes under Brotherhood’s fire after Egypt visit

The visit Tunisian President, Kais Said, paid to Egypt has received great attention, given that it came in a sensitive regional context and as Egypt embarked on a new round of diplomatic work to support its position on Ethiopia’s Nile dam.

The visit also came as new arrangements were being made in Libya, following the signing of an agreement for ending the conflict in the country.

The President Saied and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi agreed to activate cooperation frameworks and mechanisms for consultation and coordination at all levels, especially in light of Tunisia’s current membership in the UN Security Council.

They reached consensus on the need for strengthen security cooperation and exchanging intelligence.

Counterterrorism co-operation

A statement by the Egyptian Presidency said the two leaders explored new ways to cooperate, especially in the fields of economy, trade and investment exchange.

They also agreed to increase cooperation at the security level and information exchange, especially in light of the presence of many common challenges, the Egyptian presidency said in the statement.

The meeting also focused on Ethiopia’s Nile dam, where the Tunisian President appreciated the sincere efforts made by Egypt to reach a fair and comprehensive agreement regarding the rules for filling and operating the dam to preserve its historical water rights in the Nile.

President Sisi said at a press briefing with President Saied that he conducted constructive talks with the Tunisian president.

“We tackled a large number of bilateral and regional issues of mutual interest, in a way that contributes to strengthening rapprochement between the two countries and the two brotherly peoples,” the Egyptian president said.
