Palestinian factions meeting in Cairo discussed key issues Wednesday, hoping to reach an agreement on the next phase of the reconciliation agreement.
Egypt-mediated talks began on Tuesday (November 21st) and are expected to end on Thursday (November 23rd).
Hazem Abu Shanab, an official in the Fatah movement, said that the government of reconciliation in Gaza had not yet taken place.
“Now what has been put forward directly and insistently by all parties, especially from Fatah, is to enable the government to perform its duties in the Gaza Strip, as this has not been completed so far only a small percentage,”.
Mariam Abu Daqqa, a member of the political bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), said a decision had been made to allow an Egyptian committee to oversee the transfer of power on Tuesday.
“Of course, the start of forming a national unity government … the empowerment of the government yesterday … reached a decision that we consider to be positive … The decision means that the Egyptian brothers should have an Egyptian delegation or committee intervening in the Gaza Strip that oversees the government’s ability to receive it fully, .
Hamas and Fatah signed an Egyptian- mediated reconciliation agreement on October 12 after Hamas agreed to hand over administrative control of the Gaza Strip, including the Rafah border crossing, 10 years after the movement seized control of the territory.
Egypt has helped in several previous attempts to reconcile the two movements and form a unity government.
