Former mufti describes Qaradawi as insane

Former grand mufti, Ali Gomaa, described fighters joining ISIS as defectors and mercenaries, accusing them of conspiring against Islam and Arabism.

In his interview today with privately-owned CBC satellite channel, Gomaa said those people had not ever attacked Israel although it is an occupation country.

The leading Muslim cleric comments on Yussef Qaradawi, one of wanted fugitives living in Doha, that he doesn’t have the right knowledge about Islam because he was brought up to listen to hardliners.

“He is insane. He is anything else but a preacher” he said, adding “he abandoned the real values of Islam for teaching wrong concepts which call on people to initiate violence”.

“We must purge ourselves from those who distorted the image of Islam,” he added.

Gomma had survived an assassination attempt by four armed men who shot at him while he was approaching during the Friday’s prayer in 6 October city.

He served as the country’s grand mufti, the authority responsible for giving Islamic edicts, for almost a decade until 2013.
