(MENA) – Pope Francis of the Vatican on Monday called for “peace for Jerusalem”, hoping that the “will to resume dialogue may prevail between the Palestinian and Israeli parties and that a negotiated solution can finally be reached, one that would allow the peaceful coexistence of two states.”
in his Christmas message, the Pope demanded a negotiated two-state solution to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, hours after Guatemala announced that it was becoming the first country to follow President Donald Trump’s lead and recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
He urged those celebrating Christmas around the world to look for Jesus “in the faces of little children” suffering in war-torn and conflict-riven regions from the Middle East to Africa to the Korean Peninsula, highlighting that children are suffering “because of growing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.”
Earlier in the month, Francis called for respecting the status quo in Jerusalem in accordance with the United Nations (UN) resolution following US President Donald Trump’s Jerusalem recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
In other context, Grand Imam of Al Azhar Ahmed El Tayyeb on Monday extended his congratulations to Pope Francison on Christmas.
In his message to the pope, Tayyeb hoped that peace prevails across the world and peaceful coexistence spreads among people.
He called for, as well, promoting constructive dialogue and respecting the beliefs of the others.
in conclusion, Tayyeb lauded the pope’s efforts to ease suffering of the weak and the poor all over the world.
